The drama dutifully returned on the street circuit of Azerbaijan's capital, with a joint-record four red flags brought out during Saturday's qualifying session.

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc managed to grasp pole position for the second race in a row but failed to keep it beyond lap two, when he was overtaken by Lewis Hamilton. The starting lineup for the second race at the Red Bull Ring on the 2021 Formula 1 schedule is set following today's qualifying session. Channel 4's commentator called the inaugural Saudi GP "an incredible day of confusion," which is an understatement – this will go down as one of the most contentious races of all time. But it delivered on thrills and means a final race of the season with the two leading drivers tied on points, as the incredible 2021 season reaches its conclusion.

Norris led for much of the race, and regained the advantage shortly after a late stop for a set of fresh rubber. On soft-compound tires, Verstappen took the fastest lap of the qualifying session. His Red Bull teammate, Sergio Perez, will be starting fourth. With the drivers' championship so closely contested, the qualifying session could play a major role in deciding the outcome. Meanwhile, Mercedes seem to have a firm grasp on the constructors' title, and only need 17 points on Sunday to clinch, regardless of Red Bull's results. Verstappen started seventh but made a storming start to reach fourth by turn one, but Hamilton capitalised on pole position and kept his lead.

By lap five, Vesrtappen was up into second place, driving the doors off his Red Bull , with Bottas and Perez also driving through the field to make up for lowly grid positions. The seven-times world champion again had to settle for second place, although he did snatch an extra point for the fastest lap thanks to a late pit stop. Mercedes Boss Toto Wolff admitted that, for the first time in the turbo-hybrid era that his team has dominated, Mercedes had "no weapons in our armoury".

Hamilton agreed, estimating that Red Bull had an advantage of a quarter of a second on every lap of its home circuit. A year later, Vettel began a string of four straight World Drivers' Championships encompassing 25 grand prix triumphs and 20 other podium appearances. Red Bull won the constructors' championships the four years that Vettel won his titles, potentially lending credence to Christian Horner's assertion that the cars were better than what Max Verstappen drove last season. Having the ability to move races around along with bringing them on and off the calendar would keep each season feeling different within career mode.

There's nothing as frustrating as the repetitive interviews from Claire, except maybe a wet race weekend in Singapore. The introduction of press interviews made sense to career mode, after all drivers have to face the microphones every weekend.

However, they've never been done particularly well. A lot more time has passed since his last F1 outing, so there'd be questions about his sharpness. But this would be an extreme situation for Mercedes, so whoever it chose would be a punt. The 2022 cars being designed to a completely new rules set works in Hulkenberg's favour, as everyone is starting with a clean sheet of paper. With that in mind, Nyck de Vries would be my first choice.

The reason for this is that it would allow the team to focus on George Russell, who I think we all know has the credentials to lead the team and if they give him the tools win races and possibly the championship. Were I faced with such a situation, I would consider it a fast-tracking of Mercedes' inevitable path to the post-Hamilton era of Russell leading the team with someone alongside him. Only I don't think I'd want to rush in any of the drivers you'd want to pair him with. So, working on the basis Russell is the eventual number one, I'd just look for the best short-term option and then as 2022 progresses I'd take a look for a Russell wingman longer-term. Charles Leclerc says after four F1 seasons he still finds it difficult to find the right balance in a race weekend between Saturday qualifying and Sunday racing.

The German won all four of his F1 world championship titles to date at Red Bull between 2010 and 2013, prior to his move to Ferrari. But he struggled to make an impact there and moved to Aston Martin before the start of the 2021 season, in which he claimed only a sole podium at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix by finishing second in Baku. What is not in doubt is that track position will be crucial. Even with the revisions to the track made this year - which the drivers seem positive about - it does not look like it is going to be a good track for following cars, though it may be better for overtaking. For the first time since 2016 and for only the second time since 2012, the championship has gone down to the final race. In fact, both championships are still up for grabs, though Mercedes' 28-point advantage over Red Bull in the constructors means something strange will need to happen for Red Bull to win that title. Verstappen's car has only just had a rear wing fitted and Sergio Perez's doesn't even have one on yet.

Still 20 minutes to go and the teams are very good at getting this done in time but rear wing issues have been frequent for Red Bull this season. Verstappen goes wide at turn two and then complains of a massive flat spot. Reminder that whatever time he sets his best lap on in this session he will start the race on.
